Vocational & Technical Skills

Living Earth Uganda works to design and deliver training programmes that build capacity of instructors from vocational training institutions (VTIs) in the country. For instance, recently LEU implemented the same in Bulisa, Hoima and Masindi districts under its Jobs & oil project.

This is key to increased confidence and capacity amongst instructors from VTIs, enhanced delivery of vocational training and improved learning experience for students.

This is yielding enhanced standards of skills development and increased access to specific employment areas.

Functional Skiils Training

Living Earth Uganda, for several years now, has been delivering functional skills training to several communities in a number of areas to enable them diversify business enterprises and create employment and incomes sources.

These areas have been majorly determined by the availability of the market and profitability of the products to enhance achieving better standards of living amongst the beneficiaries. Some of the functional skill areas include:

  • Commercial cookery
  • Briquette making
  • Soap making
  • Sanitary pads making
  • Candle making
  • Animal feeds making
  • Energy saving stoves
  • Waste collection and management

Youth Placement

Living Earth Uganda values the need for hands-on experience for tertially institution students.

Recently LEU established an internship, apprenticeship and work experience programme in Hoima, Buliisa and Masindi providing places for 1,500 youths.

This has lead to receipt of first-hand working experience for the youths, improved understanding of professional context and requirements amongst youth, improved understanding of potential workforce amongst employers and, increased access to long-term employment for participating youth.

Stakeholder Engagement

Living Earth Uganda believes that good progress happens when stakeholders are engaged.

Recently in our Jobs and Oil project, LEU worked to put up a platform to ensure an on-going engagement with oil sector CSR and contracting departments to establish systems which, while rigorous, would enable contracts with newly formalised enterprises. This is key to increased understanding amongst all stakeholders of the capacities and requirements of the others, new systems to increase opportunities for local MSE’s, increased income for MSE’s and, improved CSR performance for oil sector.

LEU is also provided an opportunity for engagement with oil sector on global best practice models for industry support to vocational training provision which will lead to enhanced institutional awareness and understanding of effective approaches, platform for oil industry to engage effectively in vocational training provision and enhanced service provision to stakeholders. LEU also organized stakeholders’ roundtable meetings, town hall meetings and forums for local and national policy makers, business community, NGOs, CSOs to dialogue on opportunities that come with oil and gas industry in the region.

Health, Safety & Environment

Living Earth Uganda supports development of supplementary modules on health and safety at work; employment rights; etc to complement ongoing vocational and skills training courses.

This increases awareness and understanding amongst the current and potential workforce of relevant rights, dissemination of knowledge to wider stakeholder group; greater confidence and capacity amongst stakeholders to hold employers to account and, adherence to regulation at policy level by industry employers.

Local Enterprise Promotion

Living Earth Uganda has been at helm of promoting enterprise development in the in the different projects they have promoted over the years.

To date LEU has established a partnership with Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Entrepreneurship Centre so as to develop and deliver a business training programme; African Urban Enterprise Development Programme (AUEDP) to 320 managers/entrepreneurs. The youth and women entrepreneurs will receive training in producing their own business plans, making cash flow projections, building business relationships, local regulations for micro and small enterprises (MSEs), health at workplace and selling your products or services. The intervention will lead to emergence of a skilled and effective business sector wherein youth and women-led enterprises derive income from delivery of service contracts to the oil industry supply chain.

This will eventually lead to strengthened capacity amount entrepreneurs in Hoima, Buliisa and Masindi to manage micro-enterprises strategically, growth in business, increased income, increased access to contract and credit, and further business expansion and, increased number of employees.

LEU is also positioning itself to support provision of business advisory services in form of business clinics and mentorship to MSEs to intensively be engaged in delivering goods and oil sector services and related activities.

Eco Enterprise Development

LEU has extended its frontiers to supports eco enterprise development. This is done through the development of a cadre of rural enterprises in communities that border protected areas including national parks, forest and wildlife reserves.

A case in point is Hoima, Bulisa and Masindi districts where the enterprises will receive training to improve their business management skills and to identify and develop projects for which funds from the Revenue Sharing Agreements offered by Uganda Wildlife Authority can be invested.

The enterprises identified through the mapping and scoping exercise include amongst others:

  • Community tourism
  • Park guides
  • Eco tourist sites
  • Beekeeping / Apiary
  • Fish cage farming
  • Bird watching
  • Social ventures
